In general, printing with a correctly set up printer and using the correct settings in your software and printer driver will result in a very acceptable print.
If your print is clearly not right this could be due to one or more of several factors of which a few are:
1. One or more incorrect settings in your procedures
2. Use of ink and/or paper from third party manufacturers ( i.e. other than the manufacturer of your printer ) without profiles specifically for those materials and your printer.
3. Faulty printer performance - blocked ink jets, banding etc
